 Silali is among the largest shield volcanoes in the Eastern Rift Valley.
 The summit of the volcano is truncated by a volcanic caldera 5 x 8 km wide and with walls up to 300 meters high. Its formation is thought to be due to an event that occurred about 63,000 years ago.
